What is the best water filter to filter water for the whole house?

I am not trying to be cute but, the one you can get replacement filters for . I have seen many whole house filters come and go. Know what your supply is going to be and avoid the latest wonder that may just be a flash in the pan.

When it is installed it would be helpful to have a bypass available in case you have to remove the unit. Also helpful will be the valves on both sides to turn the water off from both directions so that you can easily change the filter and remove the unit if you have to replace it. Look for one with a metal housing. It will hold up better and there is less chance of cross threading it during installation. There is also less chance of it leaking.
