How should I keep my basement apartment free of insects and pests?

The house is quite old and we rent the basement space. It was freshly painted a month ago.But we have some serious trouble with insects – moths, spiders, fruit flies and tonight, I found what I believe was a centipede on my bed. The apartment also feels and smells damp. There is a lot of condensation in the bathroom. Everything just feels damp! Would a dehumidifier help for all of these problems?
